Add Chilli to your Bone Broth for a spicey alternative.
Add Chilli to your Bone Broth for a spicy, healthy alternative.

The quickest way to make a spicy bone broth drink is to heat up a nice cuppa broth and then add a pinch of chilli powder.  The health benefits of combining these two super foods are amazing.  Read on to find out more…..

Most of the recipes that use beef broth, chicken broth, (or any type of broth for that matter) are fairly plain.  But by adding a little chilli to the mix, you can instantly transform your regular tasting broth into something quite unique.  Combining some chili with the heady cocktail of nutrient rich bone broth….. You end up with a super healthy, great tasting drink, that has loads of health benefits.

A good way to easily spice up regular bone broth is to add chilli powder to taste.  I usually heat up a single  cup of Broth in a pot on the stove so it is super easy just to add a half teaspoon of chilli powder to the mix, (depending on how hot you like it.)
But there are a couple of tricks to maximize your health benefits.

Recipes that use beef broth

Chilli powder and Bone Broth are a spicy, healthy mix.

This is not only super tasty but it is also really beneficial for you health. As chilli has 7 times the amount of vitamin c what compared to oranges. That’s huge! The massive amounts of vitamin c in chilli powder act as a powerful natural antioxidant. This strengths the bodies immune system and helps you heal from injuries a a greater rate.

Chilli contains 7 times the amount of vitamin C, compared to oranges.

And that’s just the tip of the proverbial health ice berg, when it comes to chilli. The list of health benefits from chilli powder and chillies in general  is a mile long.

Some of the more interesting health benefits of chille are:

  • chilli is has 7  times more vitamin C, compared to oranges.
  • Chilli powder is rich in vitamin A, which is an essential nutrient for the body.
  • Chilli is also a powerful detoxifier, ridding the body of nasty toxins and what not.
  • Chilli is a natural pain killer.
  • Chilli is a powerful anti inflammatory.
  • Chilli opens and clears congested airways in the body.
  • Chilli contains lycopene which is a known compound in reducing the risk of cancer.
  • Chilli promotes blood flow to sites of infection in the body and increases the rate of healing.
The list goes on and on …..
As the vitamin C in chillies is easily denatured by heat, in excess of 70 degrees Celsius (158 Fahrenheit), it is important that you don’t let the bone broth boil.  As I am just adding a single cup of bone broth to a pot and reheating, it is quite simple to not let the pot boil.  I just basically reheat on a low temperature until it looks hot enough to drink without having to let it cool.
Don't over heat the Bone Broth and the chilli.

Don’t over heat the Bone Broth, as heat over 70 degrees celcius denatures the Vit. C in the chilli.

If you are going to be making up a big batch of bone broth from scratch and you want to add a bit of spicy chilies, then you should only add the chilli after the initial boiling stage.

Basically don’t let the chilli get too hot, and all the vitamin C will remain intact and bioavailable.

I dont really make up big steaming pots of spicy chilli bone broth, and I find it easier to just add a pinch or more of chilli powder to taste, when the urge strikes me.  But you dont just have to use chilli powder,  you can use fresh chillies for a different flavour again.  Or you could use chilli flakes, or even a squirt of sriracha hot sauce.
So if you feel like you may be coming down with a cold or a flu, or if you are trying to speed up the healing of an injury or you just want a tasty change to the regular bone broth, then definitely add a sprinkle or more of chilli into your next cup of bone broth.
