A great way to make healthy, toxin free bone broth.
The Breville Portable Stainless Steel 1600W Hot plate is a great addition to the broth makers kitchen arsenal. The fact that making broth actually requires very little tools or equipment is a boon. Also the fact that the broth is a potent health supplement that is really dependent on the quality of the ingredients and the equipment should be reason enough to invest in some first rate equipment and appliances.
We have made hundreds of liters of broth using a multitude of different cooking appliances. Some great, some not so and others….well , some of them are down right scary.

This is the main reason why we choose to steer clear of the ceramic slow cookers and crock pots that contain differing amounts of lead in the ceramic glaze, that ends up poisoning your food.
Even though the ceramic slow cookers are easy to use its just not worth the risk.

The actual hot plate is made out of die cast steel and measures 19 cm. The body of the Breville handy hot plate is made out of stainless steel, and is relatively maintenance free and super duper easy to clean.
The whole unit measures approx. 30cm x 22cm x 7.5cm, so its compact enough to fit in the cupboard when not being used and also doesn’t take up very much kitchen bench real estate when it is being used.

You are not chained to the stove whilst making an epic batch of 48 hour bone broth. We have also been known to put the Breville handy hot plate out-side in a covered sheltered area, when cooking up fish broth. This stops the whole house from smelling like good old fashioned wholesome fish broth. Just be sure to have the hot plate set up out of reach of pets, stray animals or wild kids.

Does the broth from the Breville Portable Stainless Steel 1600W Hot plate taste better? Yes.
To be honest it really does. This is because the bone broth is being cooked in an inert, chemical free, quality, stainless steel pot. And not in a ceramic glazed slow cooker that possibly leaches lead into the bone broth.
How long does it take to clean the Breville Portable Stainless Steel 1600W Hot plate? About 30 seconds. just wipe down the hot plate when cool and the other stainless steel surfaces. Done! Simple as that.
How long does it take to make bone broth with the Breville Portable Stainless Steel 1600W Hot plate? The cooking times are exactly the same for the Breville Handy hot plat as any other slow cooker or crack pot.
Are there any bad points with the Breville Portable Stainless Steel 1600W Hot plate? Yes. Life isn’t perfect and so it is the same with the Breville handy hot plate, (but we still love it).
-It takes a bit of fiddling to really get a low simmer on the temperature dial. It just takes a bit of patient; set the temperature, wait a couple of minutes to see if its still simmering, adjust dial up or down depending on the simmer state of the broth.
-It would be great if the Breville handy hot plate had a timer, like some slow cookers have (set and forget) but it doesn’t.
Is the Breville Portable Stainless Steel 1600W Hot plate better than a slow cooker? Yes and No. The Brevile Handy hot plate is a little more hands on as it doesnt have set and forget controls or a timer. however the Brevillle handy hot late is a lot healthier to cook with compared to a ceramic glazed (lead poisoning) slow cooker.
At the end of the day, if you are making bone broth for health reasons then there should be no question. The breville handy hot plat is the healthier choice.
Here are a few tips when using the Breville Portable Stainless Steel 1600W Hot plate:
- Make sure that the hot plate is set up out of reach of kids, etc…
- If cooking a batch of bone broth over night make sure that the hot plate is set up in a safe part of the bench or outside.
- Take a couple of minutes of fine tune the temperature dial to really get the perfect bone broth simmer going.
- If setting up hot plate outside, make sure its covered , (by some sort of a roof) to stop getting wet, (electricity and rain…..not the greatest combo when making bone broth.

This little Hot plate is a Healthy choice (no lead leaching), Super compact, realtively cheap, and reliable. A win….

The whole hot plate set up is compact and sturdy enough for even the most space saving and rugged of cooks.
And it also cooks practically anything else you would want to cook on a normal stove stop element. The only difference being that yo can have the Breville Handy Hot Plate set up anywhere you want.
The Breville Handy Hot Plate is also quite cheap to buy. You can pick one up for about $50 or so. Definitely a bargain considering the health implications you side step and the different ways you can use this handy little hot plate.
